Classes

Mahalo for your interest in dancing with Hālau Kaulakahi. We welcome students of all ages and look forward to getting to know you and your ‘ohana. All classes are held at Papakōlea Community Center unless otherwise indicated.


Tuition and Registration

  • Tuition is $50 per month, per student. A discount of $10 will apply for siblings (eg. $90 will be due for 2 siblings).

  • New students are welcome. Please complete this Application Form.

  • To register or for inquiries outside of open enrollment, please complete the form on our Contact page.

  • An annual administration fee of $50 will be collected from all students each January.

  • A hālau uniform (t-shirt and pā‘ū) is required for all students. Pricing is as follows: $75 for keiki (11 years and younger) and $125 for adults (12 years and older).

  • Students may be asked to purchase additional items such as costumes,  implements and lei in order for them to participate in performances.


Classes can change at anytime at the discretion of the kumu. Private lessons by appointment.

 

Keiki Classes

Pa‘alima

Keiki: Ages 3 - 7

Saturday: 8:15am - 9am

This class is appropriate for the young beginning dancer. Children are introduced to hula with basic hand and foot movements, and will learn ancient and contemporary  hula as well as simple Hawaiian language through chant and song. We find fun and innovative ways of teaching to promote aloha, appreciation for Hawaiian culture, and a love for hula.

Momi

Keiki: Ages 7 - 12

Saturday: 9am - 10am

This class is for children to better know their basic hula steps. They will learn traditional and contemporary dances which require more challenging movement and utilize hula implements. Classes are taught with the use of Hawaiian customs and traditional values to help promote the cultivation of working together and the aloha spirit.

Lenalena

‘Ōpio: Ages 13 - 18

Saturday: 10am - 11am

Students will continue the mastery of hula basics for both traditional and modern styles of hula. This class will help prepare students to move forward in skill and understanding of the Hawaiian culture through hula. Focus will be on advanced choreography, oli (chanting) and the Hālau Kaulakahi style of hula. The importance of laulima (working together) and aloha are practiced in this class.


 

Wahine Classes

Kipona

Beginner and Intermediate, Ages 18 and up

Monday: 6:45pm - 8pm

Queen Emma Summer Palace

This is an entry level class for all new students, regardless of previous hula experience. This class introduces students to traditional and contemporary hula basic steps, hand motions and dance posture. Students will learn basic Hawaiian language through chant and song. Classes are taught with the use of Hawaiian customs and traditional values to help promote the cultivation of working together and the aloha spirit.

‘Alīlea

Performance (by invitation only), Ages 18 and up

Wednesday: 6:30pm - 7:30pm

This class is by invitation only. Intermediate students will advance to the performance group upon Kumu’s assessment and approval. Students will master the Kaulakahi style of hula hands and foot movements through advanced choreography. Hawaiian language and traditions will be practiced as students experience a deeper understanding of hula. This class will require the commitment of performances and competitions. Hawaiian values such as laulima (working together) and ‘ohana are a vital part to the success of this class.

Kahelelani

Kupuna 60 and up

Monday: 5:30 - 6:30pm

Queen Emma Summer Palace

Come and enjoy a hula class that's age-appropriate with skill building lessons. This class will focus on light hand and foot movements, song interpretation, basic Hawaiian language and hula expression. Hawaiian culture and values of  ‘ohana are practiced with aloha.


Kāne Classes

Kahakaha

Men 13 and up

Wednesday: 7:30-8:30pm

Students in this class will focus on the basics of traditional and modern hula, oli, as well as choreography. Class includes Hawaiian language, cultural traditions, protocol and interpretation of chants and songs. This class at times will be athletic and challenging, however time will be taken to ensure that students will be prepared for Hālau Kaulakahiʻs men’s style of hula. 


Online Classes

Pō‘akahi Papa Hula

Intermediate
Monday: 9am - 10:15am

  • Instruction of hands and feet, traditional songs.

  • Previous knowledge of hula basic steps are recommended.

  • Classes are ongoing. We learn one verse of the mele every week until the song is completed and reviewed.

Pō‘akolu Papa Hula

Advanced
Wednesday: 11am - 12:15pm

  • Instruction of hands and feet, traditional and contemporary songs.

  • Previous knowledge of hula basic steps are recommended.

  • Classes are ongoing. We learn one verse of the mele every week until the song is completed and reviewed.
